Golfer Gary Player was born on November 1, 1935, in Johannesburg, South Africa. He entered the U.S. PGA circuit in 1957 and won championships multiple times. He was the third golfer to win the “grand slam of golf,” winning the Masters, the U.S. Open, the British Open and the PGA Championship.
Secret 1: Work Hard
” The harder you work, the luckier you get”
Luck is not a characteristic of great sportsmen, leaders, and entrepreneurs. The great are defined by their incredibly hard work, blood, sweat, and tears. Great people don’t rely on chance but think through every single aspect of the business, or their craft.
“Chance favours the prepared mind” Louis Pasteur
Secret 2: Respect your craft
One of the great US presidents, JF Kennedy, once gave a speech and said that people should ask what they can give to America but not what they can get from it. For one to be successful in any craft or field one should respect the craft and desire to always give back to it. Your craft or mission should be bigger than you.
“Golf is a puzzle without an answer. I’ve played the game for 40 years and I still haven’t the slightest idea how to play.” – Gary Player
Secret 3: Your thoughts determine your success
Gary Player is one of the greatest golf players of all time and he attributes his right thinking to his success. Many people don’t achieve greatness not because of lack of talent or because they are not working hard but by limiting beliefs they have.
“We create success or failure on the course primarily by our thoughts.” Gary Player
Secret 4: Be obsessed with your craft
Obsession is a powerful and potentially positive mental state. An obsession, by definition, is something that excessively preoccupies the mind. Gary Player like other greats was obsessed with improving his game daily and he loved the sport more than anything.
“It’s a marriage. If I had to choose between my wife and my putter, well, I’d miss her.” – Gary Player.
